From Family-Operated to Global Success

It all started with window treatments.  Joe Hyman (known as Papa Joe) started a family business in New York City in the 1930’s.  He brought the first Venetian & bamboo Blinds into the U.S. and popularized them across the country.  Since then, bamboo roman shades and Venetian (mini) blinds have remained a staple of our business today.

In the 1950’s the family moved to Los Angeles, CA and became one of the early trading pioneers by importing products from the Far East for national distribution. Working with early DIY and hardware stores, the business began to grow by installing Venetian Blinds in army barracks and becoming a supplier to the Sears Catalogue.

In 1976, Lewis (Lew) Hyman (Papa Joe’s son) with Wolfgang Moeller, made his first trip to China and founded Lewis Hyman Inc. in El Segundo, CA as a two-man operation.  Opening an office in Taiwan for sourcing, Wolf and Lew traveled extensively to the Pacific Rim, India, and Europe.  They also created a strong customer base on the west coast and built a company that became the foundation of what you see today.

Jim Hyman, Lew’s son, joined the family import business out in California in 1980.  He had a vision to help the company create new products and become a national supplier. To help drive this vision, and support two new customers called Home Depot and Lowes, Robert LeBlanc opened the first East Coast office and distribution center in Atlanta, GA in 1986.  With this new office came dramatic growth, as the era of “Big Box” retailers began.

With the passing of Lew Hyman in 2006, Jim Hyman became CEO, Robert LeBlanc became COO, and Wolfgang Moeller transitioned into a board advisory role.  It was a time of transition for the team, and a time to continue to build on the founding principles of the company.

As the recession started in 2008 – 2009, we continued to invest in our company and our future.  Focusing on global expansion, with the unique power of consumer brands we expanded our portfolio. Under a new company, LH Licensed Products, Inc., we acquired the Vanish brand for cleaning products and became a licensee for Kathy Ireland for decorative shelving.  Finally, we became a Honeywell Global Licensee for Safes, Door Locks, Paper shredders, and Security products.  With a 93% consumer recognition rate, the Honeywell brand continues to lead our global expansion.

Lewis Hyman, Inc. and LH Licensed Products, Inc. rebranded under the company name Hyman Inc., to unify communications and alignment. Our global expansion continues to be driven by new innovative products, new opportunities, and new channels of distribution to provide unique and distinctive quality products with world-class service to over 85 countries.

As we have continued to grow, Robert LeBlanc has now become President, and Hyman Inc has offices in California, Georgia, North Carolina, Portugal, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.  We continue to support our customer/partners in e-Commerce, big boxes, home décor, DIY home centers, office supply, warehouse clubs, mass merchants, and grocery and drugstore chains.
